Peptide E Collagen
Marine collagen and elastin peptides from salmon extract. Collagen and elastin are the two proteins that form the structural network of the dermis, the layer where skin is built. Both decline with age, and fibroblast activity slows markedly after forty.

What Has Been Studied
Skin structure, measured over 28 days and two months.
Significant decrease in the number of deep wrinkles
Participants took 2 grams per day over 28 days, with forearm wrinkles and crow's feet measured at the start and end. In the Peptide E Collagen group, 71 percent showed a significant decrease in the number of deep wrinkles, with an average reduction in depth of 10 percent. A further 77 percent saw fine wrinkles no longer visible.
Over the same period the control group recorded a significant increase in deep wrinkles of 28 percent, in 82 percent of subjects. The comparison against an untreated control is what makes this finding meaningful rather than the single figure on its own.

Days to first measurable change
28-day controlled study, 43 healthy female volunteers aged 40 to 55.
Peptide E Collagen group against an untreated control over the same 28 days. The control group's deep wrinkle count increased.
Participants, single-blind case control, two months
A single-blind case-control study of marine collagen peptides taken with plant-derived antioxidants including coenzyme Q10, grape skin extract and selenium, the same combination present in the Celergen formula. Skin elasticity, sebum production and dermal ultrasonic markers were all measured, alongside plasma hydroxyproline and erythrocyte ATP.
Hydroxyproline is an amino acid found almost exclusively in collagen, which makes plasma levels a useful indicator that ingested peptides reached circulation rather than being broken down in digestion.

Measurable improvement in the appearance of scarring
A clinical study recorded measurable improvement in skin recovery and the appearance of scarring, including post-surgical scars, in 85 percent of participants. The mechanism recorded was cellular, at the level of the fibroblast activity involved in tissue remodelling beneath the surface.

Fibroblast proliferation, migration and collagen synthesis
An in vitro scratch assay measuring fibroblast proliferation, migration and collagen synthesis in damaged cells. Fibroblasts sit in the dermis and are the cells that produce collagen and elastin, which is why they are the relevant cell type for this ingredient.
This is laboratory work in cell culture rather than a study in people.

In Context
How the three actives divide the work.
300 mg per capsule
Bio-DNA Cellular Marine Complex
The primary marine active. The broadest research base of the three, and the component the Tufts University study was conducted on.
40 mg per capsule
Hydro MN Peptide
Marine cartilage extract, 35 to 40 percent chondroitin sulphate. Studied for skin structure under UV exposure and for glycaemic response.
A note on evidence
Two of the studies above are peer reviewed and indexed. The 28-day wrinkle study is controlled against an untreated group. The fibroblast work is cell culture rather than a study in people, and is labelled as such.
